The Snorkel Supports Proper Body Position.
A swim snorkel helps athletes to focus on keeping proper body position on the surface of the water. To eliminate drag and increase speed, a swimmer must focus the eyes a few inches in front of them. Otherwise, the hips and legs will sink below the surface. When practicing this skill with a snorkel, failure to stay on the surface of the pool will result in water entering the tube.
The Snorkel Promotes A More Balanced Stroke.
Training with a snorkel allows swimmers to forgo movement when taking a breath. This in turn enables them to more heavily focus on keeping the shoulders facing forward. By honing in on that forward body position the hips naturally follow, creating overall balance in the water. Once an athlete goes back to swimming without the snorkel they have a better understanding of how to stabilize body position while reincorporating breath into the stroke.
The Snorkel Helps With Building A More Consistent Kick.
Integrating a snorkel into a kicking drill allows athletes to maintain a streamline position, while still focusing on the legs. This is a bonus for swimmers of all levels because it reinforces the concept of natural balance in the water. In addition, kicking with a snorkel often helps to alleviate stress on the shoulders.
The Snorkel Strengthens Breathing Technique.
In terms of breathing, the snorkel is an ideal tool for working on control in flip turns. When entering a flip turn, the use of a snorkel forces swimmers to focus on taking one deep breath to push excess water out from the tube. This exaggerated breath encourages an overall increase in lung capacity.
Another way to explore breathing with a snorkel is through the use of restrictor sets. By limiting airflow with either a moderate or advanced cap, the snorkel helps to build cardio strength and further increase lung capacity.
