It’s no secret that time in the sun and chlorine can wreak havoc on the health of your skin and hair. However, with proper preparation and a little TLC, you can keep dryness and split ends at bay.
For some easy to follow advice you can try at home, we checked in with Team TYR athlete and Olympian Leah Smith. Read on below for her tried and true tips to healthy skin and hair.
REMEMBER TO INVEST IN PROPER PROTECTION.
Since I swim outside, I always keep sunscreen nearby. This protects my skin from aging and sun damage, which is essential for having healthy skin.
KEEP UP THE HYDRATION.
Because chlorine can be drying, I always keep a bottle of moisturizer in my swim bag. Throughout the day I will periodically re-apply lotion, as well as spray my face with a hydrating mist. These are must haves for my skin.
On days when I know I can sleep in, I apply a deep conditioning product or treatment to my hair before bed. This gives my hair an opportunity to soak in some extra moisture.
ALWAYS RINSE, BUT TRY NOT TO OVER-WASH.
As a swimmer it’s easy to want to over-wash my hair because I’m in the pool at least once or twice a day. While I always rinse after a swim, I try to stick to shampooing every other day. This helps to keep my hair from getting dried out.
