TYR How to: Proper Butterfly Stroke

At TYR, we’re all about upping our game- which is why we’ve designed our series of How to Videos to help athletes take their training to the next level.

In our most recent upload we’re diving into how to achieve a proper hand position in your butterfly stroke, featuring none other than 6x Olympic Medalist and 23x World Championship Medalist Matt Grevers. Check out the video and our tips below, plus stay tuned for more tutorials to come!

Proper butterfly stroke technique helps to keep balance between your body movement and leg kick. Butterfly arms are a continuous and simultaneous movement that require significant upper body strength.

Begin with the front of the stroke. Extend your arms straight out along the surface of the water keeping your middle fingers in line with your shoulders. Next drop the fingertips to face the bottom of the pool, popping your elbows up as if you are wrapping your arms around a barrel.

Next check in with your pull. Guide your thumbs outside the blue/black line at the bottom of the pool. This will force you to push the water straight back towards your feet.

Finally, brush your thumbs past your thigh as you finish the stroke, pushing back as much water as possible.

Practice Tip- You can improve your timing in this stroke by practicing single arm butterfly breathing to the side.

TYR How To: Proper Backstroke

With the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series well underway, we want to help athletes up their game in time for race day.

In our most recent “TYR Sport How to Video” we’re diving into how to achieve proper body position in your backstroke, featuring none other than 6x Olympic Medalist and 23x World Championship Medalist Matt Grevers. Check out the video and our tips below, plus stay tuned for more tutorials to come!

Proper arm stroke is the key to maximizing speed and efficiency in your backstroke. When beginning a stroke on your back, you are in a less natural position to see your pull. As a result, stroke technique is essential.

  • To begin, start with the hand entry phase. With the head at a 12:00 o’clock position, your body should penetrate the water pinky finger first at either 11:00 or 1:00 o’clock. This is the most natural position for the arm to begin the pull phase of the stroke.
  • Here, maintain a necessary bend in the elbows (similar to in the freestyle). As the hand goes through the pull phase you should feel as though you are throwing water down toward your hip.
  • In order to be in the proper position for the hand entry, the pull phase and the finishing portion of the stroke, it is important to rotate from the hips, keeping the rest of the body in line as you move.
  • Practice Tip- To practice proper technique in your arm stroke try focusing on rotating the hips and shoulders together. Though your momentum will ultimately come from the hips, you want the shoulders to move in line as one. While on your back, press the center of the back between your shoulder blades toward the bottom of the pool. This will help you to maintain a strong and aligned body position.

Six Exercises for a Matt Grevers Six Pack

Curious about how 4X Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Grevers maintains those abs of steel? Well, so were we- which is why we sat down with him during our most recent trip to Palm Springs to find out.

Like many of Matt’s fans, we were interested in hearing just how the 6’8” team TYR athlete keeps his core looking and feeling its strongest. But for a swimmer, having powerful stomach muscles is about a lot more than aesthetics. An activated core helps to properly connect, drive and fire up the arms and legs, promoting a streamlined body position in the water. Strength training through the torso also empowers athletes to not only improve technique, but to enhance propulsion for a faster swim. And really, who wouldn’t want to shave off a second or two?

So, what’s Matt’s secret? Well, aside from healthy eating and spending tons of time in the pool, Matt is quick to note the importance of land workouts. But if wandering your way through weights and medicine balls isn’t really your thing, have no fear. Below are six do-anywhere exercises that require nothing but your very own body weight. Incorporate these into your regular routine and we’re sure you’ll start to see results. After all, look at Matt!
